What Is a 2U Rack Blank Panel?
A 2U rack blank panel is a metal plate that covers unused space in a standard 19-inch server rack. It stands two rack units tall (2U = 88.9 mm / 3.5 inches).
Without blank panels, hot exhaust air recirculates through open rack spaces, forcing cooling systems to work harder and raising ambient temperatures around your equipment. Blank panels seal those openings and direct airflow where it needs to go.
Beyond airflow management, these panels also block dust and give the entire installation a clean, professional appearance.
Material Options for 2U Rack Blank Panels
Cold-Rolled Steel
The most common choice among customers. It offers good structural strength and dimensional stability, and it takes powder coating exceptionally well.

Galvanized Steel
Retains the strength of steel while providing significantly better rust and corrosion resistance.
Stainless Steel
Corrosion-resistant and easy to clean. Well suited for humid or chemically aggressive environments.
Aluminum
Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and easy to handle during installation and shipping. A strong choice when appearance matters.

Surface Finish Options
The right finish depends on the level of corrosion protection and the visual requirements of your installation.
| Finish | Best For | Key Advantage |
| Powder Coating | Data centers, server rooms, network cabinets, and general indoor racks | Durable, abrasion-resistant, wide color selection — easy to match surrounding cabinet hardware |
| Epoxy Coating | Industrial environments with regular exposure to cleaners, solvents, or chemicals | Superior chemical resistance; ideal for panels that need frequent wiping or cleaning |
| Anodizing | Aluminum panels for broadcast equipment, AV gear, and display racks | Hard, wear-resistant surface that won’t chip or peel; preserves the natural look of aluminum |
| Hot-Dip Galvanizing | Outdoor cabinets, telecom enclosures, humid or long-term exposed installations | Thicker zinc layer delivers excellent rust and weather resistance for demanding environments |
| Brushed Stainless Steel | Food processing, pharmaceutical, broadcast studios, and appearance-critical applications | No coating required; corrosion-resistant, easy to clean, and hides fingerprints and minor scratches |
Applications
Data Centers & Server Rooms
Block unused rack units to optimize thermal management and cooling efficiency.

Professional Audio & Broadcast
Blank panels double as connector mounting plates for patch bays and signal routing.
Telecom
Panels in telecom enclosures often need to be sealed against dust, moisture — and in some cases, water.
Power Electronics
A blank panel can serve as a physical divider between power distribution zones and data zones within the same rack.
Industrial Control
Panels in industrial settings face harsher conditions, so materials and coatings need to exceed what standard indoor environments require.
Network Closets
Common in small offices, schools, and retail locations. In these highly visible spaces, the appearance of blank panels reflects the overall standard of equipment management.

FAQ
- Will a 2U blank panel fit in a standard 19-inch rack?
Yes. All our panels are fabricated to standard 19-inch rack dimensions. Mounting hole patterns can also be adjusted to match your drawings.
- Can I customize vent holes, connector cutouts, and mounting holes?
Yes. Please provide your files in PDF, DWG, STEP, or IGES format.
- Which material should I choose?
Cold-rolled steel works well for standard indoor cabinets. Galvanized steel is better for humid environments. Choose stainless steel when corrosion resistance and cleanliness are critical. Aluminum is ideal when weight, shipping cost, or aesthetics are a priority. The best choice ultimately depends on your environment and budget.
- Can I customize the panel color and finish?
Yes. SR MFG offers powder coating in standard colors including black, white, and grey. For OEM customers who require a specific color code, we also provide custom color matching. Finish options include powder coating for steel panels and anodizing for aluminum panels.
